Well, after a month of building, and 2 weekends of racing, the family had a great year at the area Kub Kars, and Scout Trucks events.

Last weekend...
My two youngest came in 1st and 2nd for speed in Kub Kars in their pack (20+ kids)
My 2nd eldest came in 1st for speed in Scout Trucks in his troop (~15 kids)

This weekend,
My 2nd eldest took 2nd place for speed in the area Scout Trucks (against the fastest trucks from all of the troops in the area) - beaten by 2/1000 of a second to the first place truck (when they had a 'for fun' race between the top 4 trucks at the end, he came in 1st by almost a truck length ... too bad that race didn't count - it's the luck of the draw which lane you get)
My eldest entered a truck in the area adult/leader race, and took 3rd for speed
My wife entered a car in the area adult/leader race, and took 1st for design ... she took inspiration from the Piers Courage DeTomaso F1 car:

She now knows how to use a Router, Band Saw, Belt and Drum Sanders and Spray Paint. It's the first time she's ventured into my workshop to use the power tools ... I think the paint job took as long as the shaping!
(Oh, and she came in 5th for speed against a bunch of guys that are obsessively honing their car building skills for years)

Congrats! Great fun indeed! Here are my kids last pinewood derby entries from about 10 years ago...

My son's entry - he did ALL the work himself. I merely supervised the use of power tools. Does the shape look familiar?! 4th place for speed.

My daughter's entry - a 1952 Ferrari 375 Indy car. She did the basic cuts, but was afraid of the power tools for the fine shaping, so I helped. Took 2nd place for speed.

My youngest daughter's 1924 Bugatti Type 35. She only used the chop saw for the basic shape. I helped with the final shaping. Took 1st place for design, and 3nd place for speed.

And my youngest daughter's Love Bug the following year (the last year she entered). We glued up some additional wood on the sides and top to get the shape she wanted, but weight went too high. I had to hog out the entire underside with a Forstner bit to get weight back down to limit. Took 1st place for speed.
MarsRed,
It would be cool to see the Pinzgauer - a fellow brought one out to a car show I was at last summer. He said he uses it from time to time to take his kids and some of their friends for ice cream ... very cool!
When doing a reply, under the text box, there's "Add Attachment" if you click on that, you can select a JPG image from your hard drive (as long as it's less than 200Kb in size).

Hope that helps.

My son took 1st in his Den and tied for second in the pack this year. I think we had about 80 cars running.

Awesome! In one of the years that followed I helped a my non-handyman neighbor finish his son's car - polished the axles, trued the wheels, set wheel angle, graphite lubed wheels/axles, etc. His son was the only boy in his troop to make it to the finals, so he had his whole troop cheering him on - a highlight for he and his dad.

Fun projects and events to be sure. Best of luck to you and your son in the district races!
