The MSD distributor signal I've been told isnt compatible with the Veglia Tach and some sort of signal converter is needed.

I don't think that is going to work. Go back and look at my post to you on this page.

Mallory Tach Adapter

The device you have outputs a 12 volt square wave tach signal which is not compatible with the original tach. You need a tach adapter that outputs a high voltage triggering signal.

I am running the MSD Digital 6AL box and to make my tach work I have the MSD Tach adapter PN 8920. I hope this helps...

Steve, I have to admit after hearing that the Mallory parts are no longer available I didn't keep on investigating that path and figured I was resigned to MSD at least in the short term and being honest trying to be as cost effective as possible while I'm still learning what I want while getting this thing on the road so I can enjoy it.

I'm getting the idea then (and I do apologise for my questions if they seem repetitive - but I am truly clueless in this particular area) that I need to get the 6AL Box and the 8920 adaptor to be able to make it work as the 8920 wont do the job on on its own?

I guess the upside is - no auto elec / mechanic in my town has been able to tell me / help me so I shouldn't be taking it too hard that I don't know myself.

I do understand the square wave signals / high voltage triggering etc... and I may have missed that cue in the other thread. But if I'm definitely looking for HVT then that helps me immensely.

You have the pro billet distributor which already outputs a square wave signal. What you need is the correct tach adapter to convert to the high voltage triggering signal. Someone on this forum has done this already.

I am running a MSD PN-8350 "Ready to run Street Pro-Billet. It does not require ignition box. To coil, Orange to neg.,blue/black from tach. to neg. Red and pink to pos. Black to ground and grey not being used. Not sure if this helps but it works for me. Good luck.

So - couple more questions while I still try and get my head around this.

RM5044 - I've got a 8350 on mine so conceivably I could just connect it as you've said and it will work?

That said - Steve, would you or anyone happen to know what the potential consequenses would be if the signal is wrong to the Tach? Would putting a square wave signal to it let the smoke out?

Last thing I want to do is stuff a good tacho. Hence I guess my questioning.

RM5044 - just out of interest what coil are you running on yours?

I've had a couple of additional Hollywood "modifications" I've cleared out from the coil area which now make getting the car coil / dist running. It'll be interesting to see if my tach works like yours...

I used a MSD tac adap.

Michael 1424, I think it is a Petronix coil. I read a review in Summit Racing on the 8350 that a Pantera owner posted saying "ignore tach lead and go back to original take off from coil". I can't get my head around the square vs. sine (round)signal. You may want to find out what adaptor Pantera Chris is using, I don't want to lead you wrong and you fry a tach. I only have about 300 miles on this engine and all this was in place when I bought the car. So far tach has worked fine but I will be open to any other options if they come up. I don't want to sell some one the car with a frying tach.

I used this on my crank trigger, easy tack worked perfect. This is Speed Way add.

If, after installing an MSD Ignition Control, your tachometer, fuel pump relay or electronic fuel injection (in foreign vehicles) doesnt operate correctly, your application may require a Tach Adapter. This is due to the trigger signal not being strong enough to trigger both the MSD and the factorys components.There are a few Tach Adapters available and for more information see pages 152 and 153. Each Adapter is simple to wire in and will have your MSD and vehicle firing away in no time! If you are using the magnetic pick-up input (green and violet wires) to trigger your MSD Ignition, you will need the PN 8920 Tach Adapter. The PN 8920 will correct the operation of most voltage-triggered tachometers that do not work directly off the tach output terminal of the MSD Control. This Adapter should also be used on current-triggered tachs (hooked in series with the ignition switch).

Installation Instructions (PDF)

If you are connecting a tachometer to an MSD Ignition, or your application is equipped with electronic fuel injection then you may need to use this Tach/Fuel Injection Adapter to ensure correct operation. This Adapter will correct the operation of most tachometers and fuel injection pump relays that do not work directly off of the MSD Ignitions 12 volt square wave tach output terminal.

I think I'll get one - it seems to be the consensus!

So, After talking to the MSD agent here today talking all things tach / tach adaptors / distributors we decided to try the RM5044 way and its worked.

I finally have a moving, original tach!

I'm not sure if it's accurate - I'll deal with that later as just now I can't drive it yet... but that's a major win!

The MSD guy here also reckons it should work straight off the "grey" or in my case "green" wire as well. I might give that a try should what I have not prove to be accurate.
