I have original OEM decklid struts on my car. the Cylinder (fat part) is up with the rod going down. I've heard that they may last longer this way. I don't know if they came that way from the factory or the PO flipped them. They work fine after 44 years, but I've seen other stock cars with them installed the other way, with the cylinder on the bottom.

Anyone know if the factory installed them Cylinder up or Cylinder down?

In theory the rod should go down ( pointed towards the ground) for "2" reasons...

"1" Pointed down eliminates the possibility (ostensibly) of water/sand/abrasive particles collecting around the shaft/rod/seal.

"2" With the rod pointed down, any particles/dust/sand, etc,etc get scraped/fall AWAY from the seal as the rod retracts into the cylinder vs collecting around the rod & possibly being pushed/forced into the seal with the rod pointed up ( double entendre)...my 4.7536 cents adjusted for inflation...Mark

...I concur with Mark..That's Rare. LOL

There is one other reason for the 'Rod facing Downward', and that is, any Oil in the Cylinder will remain on top of the Piston, keeping the Piston Seal/'O' Ring, Lubricated and this also allows the Piston to 'Wipe' the Cylinder wall, with Every Movement. The Seal will see less abrasion and will last longer, Stay Pliable and will leak less Air.
