I believe a grey market car like that is mostly worthless in CA (except for racing) because you could never get it registered. Any other states like that? I would certainly think that hurts it "saleability" and therefore its value.
I could understand bringing a car in from overseas posing problems, but why is it such an issue to register a US titled car in CA?

If it meets the smog limits in place for the year of manufacture wouldn't it comply?

I know of at least one GT5S in the Bay Area that was a grey import.
