This is not my car, and I have no connection to it, but looks a lot like it...

(I'm just the messenger - I have no association with this car. As I imagine a future poster will point out.... "caveat emptor"!)

S/N 4215 on Bring a Trailer

Lots more pictures can be seen at the link.

Looks nice, 52.5K with 6 Days to go...

Here is a quote from the ad...

"The car resided in California for most of its life before coming to Oklahoma"

Then WHY does the car STILL have California plates?

Enlarge the photo showing the shifter gates/finger.

Notice the extreme wear on the first to second gear shift finger for a car that is suppose to have 35,000 miles.

Here's another quote from the ad...

"The metal shift gate appears to have had its “fingers” removed for more accurate shifting (a common modification)".

REALLY???!!!...Non gated MORE accurate than gated?!

Yes, at one time a common modification. Maybe not more accurate (have never tried), but was said to be for quicker shifting.

Just another mod that people would cringe at doing now, especially to a perfectly fine gate.
"More accurate without a gate?"

Maybe accurate is not the right word. It doesn't take long to train yourself to hit the right slot for the next gear. Two more advantages over removing it:

Over-quick shifting can put the cockpit stick in 2nd while due to springiness in the long linkage, the tranny goes into another gear without grinding. The gate fingers then make it VERY difficult to get back out. Most times I need to hit the stick HARD with my hand to knock it into neutral. This is not good when driving fast.

The gate-fingers are harder than the stick so serious erosion of the stick occurs at one spot over time; some sticks break at the finger-wear spot. I repaired ours by filling the wear-groove with stainless weld by TIG, then grinding down the excess & polishing- which also removed the bluing from weld heat. No gates for us!
I do not know if it is just me, but I believe that Car looks fairly descent? For sure I have seen Cars in MUCH worse condition, Including my own when I bought it as a project! We are not exactly helping the seller to sell his Pantera by shooting it down on what is basically minor Issues? I hope he gets it sold to a happy buyer and when that day comes I am sure we will be ready to help with good advise. Look at all the current Threads and see how many people are actually asking for advise and suggestions. The Forum would not be half the fun if we all just bought perfect Cars from the beginning.

Go look at the Car and negotiate the price down to match the condition, simple?

Happy New Year

Well, these cars are 45 years old now. Car looks fantastic on the pics but sure there will be some rust and rust repairs.

But if you write "what else does it hide" you suspect the seller of comitting fraudential crime. This is nonesense, there are condition one to five cars on the market and this cars looks like a 2-3 to me.
hagerty just rose the values of our cars at about 8-10%, so 80k is reasonable for this car which it will get probably.
Sorry, I don't mean to interfere with this post. I don't know anything about this car, but I know a lot about faster shifting without the gated plates.

They are nice to look at, but I don't see what purpose they serve. Except maybe when you first picked up the car at the dealer in 1972.

I installed this 'no finger plate' many years ago. And without the fingers, shifting is so much faster and smother. And I never missed a shift. Ever. I also changed the original shift knob to a Hall 'fat' knob as I found it much more comfortable.

Some might think the plates protect the ZF and avoid grinding off your gears, but after 15 years of very hard driving, I never noticed any more shavings on the magnetized drain plug when I changed gear oil every season or two. My ZF has been flawless and hasn't been touched since I had synchros done and safety wired some 20 years ago.

I'll be you a couple of pints of "half & half" at the local pub that this car doesn't fetch close to $80,000.00 USD.

Was it not advertised at $60.000? To me that sounds more realistic, but then again I am really no expert ;-)

arrrgghh sorry just realized its an Auction, but wasn't there recently a Pantera that ended at $60.000 and then the winning Bidder was allowed to pull out of deal? It btw sounded like funny business to me......... I would go Bananas if I invested time to put my Car on an Auction and then the winning Bidder was a NO-SHOW
Confused

Yes, you are recounting the event correctly.

Here is that thread...

Sorry speed, can not hold your bet. Stuttgart to Silicon Valley is too far. Wink

I would suggest to anyone to take the shift gate away and have a go for it. It is worth it.
