Driving home from the monthly PCNC meeting last Thursday, Peter and his lovely Pantera, with a fresh stroked / supercharged 5.4 decided to take the road less traveled.

Insurance decision not yet made.

As one who has been there-done that, I know this is not a fun time for Peter.

My heart goes out to you Peter. I hope the insurance is fair and fast so you can soon get another Pantera to carry on with. If it all works out OK and the engine isn't damaged, see if you can do a buy-back of the car and salvage that at least. Judging from the rest of the damage and knowing what a buddy of mine went through when his Pantera was t-boned, it will, unfortunately, not likely be feasible to repair the car.

Ditto on the sympathy, glad to hear the driver is ok (I'm sure feeling a little sick to his stomach though).

As far as the insurance company goes, they will be as fair as they "have" to be. They are only required to pay "fair market value" unless you have stated value on the vehicle. My suggestion to everyone owning a collectable car, have it surveyed, and insured accordingly.

It really sucks to see this owners pride and joy in this condition, it's ashame for sure. Hopefully he has sufficent insurance to ease his pain.

Spoke with Peter last night. The car broke loose, without hot rod fever or any apparent driver error - it was 2:00 am, got below freezing that night and he may have hit some ice.

Once it was gone, it stayed gone - with no apparent scrubbing of speed with the brakes - again, sounds like ice.

He smacked a curb, jumped it and put the front into a steel fence post, spun it around a bit more and did in the 1/4 panel with a tree - poor tree is no longer rooted to this world. Both doors open fine, roof is straight, but there is some slight waveing showing on the passenger side 1/4 - not a good thing as that means rear 'frame' is no doubt tweeked.

Gas tank was punctured and then one of the first on-sight witnesses walks up and tosses his cig butt into a pile of leaves next to Peter's car - ARRRGH!! Luckily, no flames.

Peter was only using the lap portion of his four point belts and did smack his head into the side window pretty well. If he had been fully buckled in he probably wouldn't have made contaxct with anything.

NOTE TO THE WISE: Have four/five points? Use them - ALL the time.

He has Haggerty and a large 'agreed' value. Adjuster should visit today or tomorrow, and they have asked Peter where HE wants to take it.

My 2511 took 5-6 hours of frame straightening, front and rear, to get the chassis back in line. It came out fine and is still literally a one-finger on the wheel car at triple digit speeds, so Peters can be straightened out, too. He has a lot more panel damage than I did, however, and that is going to take some $$$$.

Mine came to $35K with a full repaint - any guesses on Peter's?

Glad to hear Peter has the correct coverage, should make returning this very nice car, to at least pre-loss condition.

My guess $65k, she's gonna be needing a lot of parts, and a whole bunch of qualified labor.

Good luck to Peter, and his ride.

Hi Peter,

So much enthusiastic support of your ice-capade, and I'll ditto the "Glad you're okay" comments, probably for many hundreds of other members who see your stomach-tightening photos. As you've been told and have heard many times in the last few days - - "It could've been worse" still much to be thankful for.

McKeel Haggerty is a car guy. Their company is fair-minded and far less "removed" from the sickness that we all share in this hobby than a big corporate behemoth. I have my insurance through them as well, coming after advice from many others. Presumably, they can at least minimize - but not erase - what you've been through.

Godspeed to your emotional and mechanical recovery!
