Here's mine. Looks like it actually bolts to teh left side of the motor and runs behind the balancer..When I dial in 16* BTDC I get alot of pinging and have to back it down to ~12 or so according to the balancer. Perhaps this is the reason.

The one you picture that goes all the way across is pointing to the same location. This is just another ford model of pointer. It is what my car had before I upgraded to the shiny one. Pinging can be caused by too much distributor timing or your balancer may have slipped and 16 deg is not really 16 deg. Although 12 deg initial is not all that bad.
