On January 16, 2009 US Airways flight 1549 encounter a flock of geese while taking off from La Guardia Airport. Both engines were damaged by the geese. Captain Chelsey Sullenberger maintained control of the AirBus A320 jet liner long enough to make a controlled landing in the Hudson River. No passengers were killed.

Below are pictures of the jet liner being retrieved from the bottom of the Hudson River. The pictures were provided by Mel Goldberg, a Pantera owner from New jersey.

According to a guy who flew on that same plane on the same flight two days before it crashed, there were some really bad engine noises and they were returning for repairs right after takeoff but managed to "resolve the problem" and continue on to their destination. This was an experienced flyer who reported this story. I think the geese thing was an easy way out for the airline. We'll see.
