I am going to re-chrome the rear bumpers on my 71' #1740 and don't know how to get the mounting bolts out of the brackets. The bolts are too long to push out of the brackets. The bumpers are fabricated of steel. The picture shows this arrangement and I know the bumper looks really rough, but the exterior shows just light pitting and the other side is really good.

What should re-chroming these pieces cost?

Thanks in advance.

John

Mike,

I have one (out of four) that looks like that too. I think I'll whack off the bolts and send them out for plating and make up the square flat nut plates for the rest of them. I have no idea why they used bolts instead of the nut plates.

I was told that it would cost between $300-$400 to have them plated and I thought they were crazy. Silly me.

Thank you very much for your help.

I had the bumpers off of my Ranchero rechromed at a place called Royal Silver in Norfolk, Va about 15years ago. It was over $600 then. Granted I think they do the best chrome I have ever seen! The shop has been around since I believe 1920. The first time I was there I thought I was at the wrong address because the place was so clean. FWIW

Dropped off the rear bumperettes for rechroming this morning and had a very pleasant surprise. They charged me $129.00 each for triple plated "show" chrome. The bezel for the front crest was $80.00. I got the whole shooten match for what I thought I was going to pay for one. The firm is:

Doesn't make much difference when the car lays in the paint shop for a year. You folks out on the coast don't know how good you have it when you have many choices for getting work done. Here in the frozen Tundra you have explain why you would want something done like that for a 36 year old car. Then there is only about 20 weeks a year that you can drive it unless you put skis on the front.
It's never going to be a year when you take it in, it just happens to go that way. When it's half done it's a little hard to just drive it out of there. My point is not to get smart with you, but we just don't have the same resouces as you have in your area. There's probably three shops in the area that would love to do it, but the end result would be about the same time frame and three to four times the cost.
Must be a snow-related thing. People in cold climates seem to move slower (myself included). The best paint shops around here will tell you 6 months for a show-quality paint job. I think they add $40/day for parking to a $2500 paint job cost and quote $10K.

If you think you have it bad in the Northern States, you should try finding even ONE shop around me to do much of anything specialized at a sensible cost.
Mark,

Funny you mentioned that storage charge. When people ask when I'm going to get my car, I tell them the storage bill isn't high enough yet.

The fella in the other office has had his F- Car in paint and complete restoration for almost fifteen years. I told him he would have to have it repainted before he took it out.
