Replacing rear deck lid release handle

My push button car was damaged during a visit at the local speed shop. They closed the door without making shure the rear deck lid release handle was "parked". The door and the door cover was damaged, and the deck lid handle was bendt.
Need to replace the handle. Do I need to remove the engine and the gas tank to get to the nut that holds the handle in position in the B pillar ?

YES !! Unfortunately.

The lever assembly is secured from the backside of the b-post with 1 or 2 nuts (can't remember) on my car.

Can't see how you should be able to get to it without pulling the tank. Maybe, if you remove the splashshield AND the heatshield, then unbolt the tank and pull it slightly towards the engine?

Talk about a small error with a big effect.

Can't it be drilled out, and something smart fabricated? (Never seen it myself)

Mikael may be on to something, although I haven't seen one either.

What about drilling out the screws, pulling the handle assembly out, and either attach nut plates or use u-shaped tinnerman nuts? Sounds like a plan to me.

OK - this is the lever from my car. As seen, there is no screws to drill out!! The lever assembly slides into the b-post at the top and is fastened at the bottom with one nut and a special washer that I couldn't find.
