I was rebolting up the tie rods yesterday and when I put the new nut on the driver's side and went to tighten it up the stud was turning. Does that mean my tie rod end is defective? Are they hard to change? Are they available from the parts dealers?
2nd ?? I have redone practically the entire car from the ground up. About the only thing I haven't touched is the steering gear box. Is it difficult to get out of the car? What is involved?
thanks

The tie rod end (that attaches to the hub assembly) is supposed to turn. As I had added a zerk fitting to lube it, I just added more grease, while tightening the nut,
which gave it enough resistance to tighten.
Steering gear box ? You mean the rack itself ? For more info, visit: http://geocities.com/provamo72/
select the Tech page, and you'll find my article on steering racks.

The design of the steering and tierods is similar to the early Ford Pinto. There's a spring-loaded joint (adjusted properly by using a ring spanner or crudely with a pipe wrench or vise-grips) that sets the tightness of the rod's spherical joint. When proper, the rod will not quite sag under its own weight while horizontal. Wire brush clean the threads for the tierod end and hold the rod with vice-grips while tighhtening the nut.
