I have a pre L car I was wondering how involved a project is is to remove all of the tim and bumpers to black them out. Also is there a way to black out nice chrome bumpers that would allow you to return them to chrome at a later date?I head something about a semi opaque black chrome treatment that was brush on but havent seen anyone marketing it.

Thanks

I suggest that you ditch the brush-on idea. It will be hard to make look like a factory finish. Try a commercial "Trim Black" available from any commercial auto-body supply shop in spray cans (if you're doing it yourself). Dupont makes a good one, as does SEM. The stuff is pretty tough but can later be removed with solvents that will not attack the chrome.

Doing all the trim should take about a day of prep (solvent clean all surfaces first), masking and spraying. Just don't do it in a breeze.

Also, don't remove the window trim as you'll likely damage some of it in the process.
I used the SEM product, on my 73, Black primer, two coats and then Black Stain two coats. Masted off the car. Then used one of those Blue scratchy pads (don't know the correct name) then cleaned everything with alcohol real good! Mine has been on for over 4 years now! If you do get a chip(and you will)it's easy to touch up. As Mark said, you can always use a solvent to clean it off if you want!
Not sure about chrome bumpers, wouldn't want to scratch them up? Maybe just clean them good and not use the pad?
Good Luck
I said green earlier but v8capri is right it was Blue...Fine

Try Blackout tape.
I used this on all my chrome trim and it came out great.
No one could tell it was not painted and it held up real well.
The nice thing about this product is you do not have to scratch the original chrome and can revert back to chrome/polished trim anytime.
Cheap and easy... I know it doesn't really go with Pantera ownership.

Oh... apply on a hot day.

I think the company is call Trimbrite and they make a lot of automotive moldings and stick on trim pieces. An automotive body and paint supply company should have it.
