Upper Rear Ball Joint Removal

Any thoughts on the best way to remove the upper rear ball joint from the a-arm? These are the original joints in a '72 and seem frozen in. I Have raplacement joints so im not concerned about damaging them, just don't want to damage the a-arm in the process. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I went to Advance Auto and "borrowed" a kit with multiple ball joint seperation presses.

the "borrowing" process was they charged my CC for a couple hundred dollars, when I returned the kit undamaged they credited the CC for the full amount.

I seperated all the joints in less than 30 minutes with little strain.

They're only lightly pressed into a steel loop. A socket or pipe fitting of appropriate size and a hammer should remove it. This may be simpler if you remove the a-arm from the car (two more bolts). If you're replacing the thing so its scrap anyway, use more effort.

Working on mine now. How did you use this tool when there is no lip around the A arm to press against? I read about grinding the top off the ball joint, but don't want to do it if this tool will work, but I don't see how it does.

You asking me? My memory is so bad I don't remember where I put the A arms, much less how I did what.

I THINK all I did was seperate the pieces where I could handle them.

Okay, well I see how it could separate the joint from the upright, got that, but pressing that joint out without mangling the arm is what I'm working on.
