Water Temp Gauge peggs on occasion

My 74 pegges the water temp guage at 260 on occasion. The cooling system is new and I have an EFI computer with water temp so I know the gauge is faulty. I have replaced the sender and ohm'd the wire from the guage to the sender and that is good. So my question is what is inside the guage and is it something that can be cleaned or repaired? Or should I toss it and buy a replacement?

If you have recently had your cooling system open (replaced a hose, etc.), you could have an air pocket causing the gauge to peg at times. If so bleed the system a few times and see what happens. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply JP. The system is tight and the sender is in the block near the thermostat. I may try to disassemble the gauge this weekend and see what I find. Worse case I buy a replacement. I was hoping someone had been through this before and had an answer.

I had a similar problem and I was told there is a resistor or diode that went bad in the gauge. I had my original gauge that I reinstalled and to this day works fine unlike the higher temp gauge that was newer but went bad.

Here is a diagram from Pantera Place. If the gauge gets a short to ground in the sender wire, it will go full scale. There might be an intermittent short somewhere in the line.

I have a nearly new 260 degree gauge I would like to sell. I bought it thinking I would rather have it than the 230 degree gauge. I had it in the car for about 6 months & switched back to the original (’73) 230 degree unit. Nothing is wrong with it, no scratches, OEM box. Looks the same as new. I was going to post it for sale last year & never got around to it. I will sell it for $70 + UPS. I will be happy to send you pictures if you are interested.

The temp gage in my Pantera will swing suddenly to full scale every once in a while. If I turn the a/c off it goes immediately back to the true reading. Its obviously an electrical issue. But since its an intermittent problem I've never been able to troubleshoot it (it only does this when I'm on the road).

Try adding a new ground wire from the gauge's ground terminal directly to a good ground.
