I got the engine rebuilt and reinstalled. There seems to be a problem with the linkage being misadjusted now. I'm not sure how this could happen. I removed the bolt from the rear turnbuckle and slid the linkage out of the way and wired it up when I removed the engine. I simply replaced it in it's original position when the engine was back in.
The shifter is now resting near the upper fingers of the shifter gate and not centered. Why would there be a change? I also noticed that one of the half-axles will rotate when the engine is revved. I'm guessing this is a stop adjustment, but again, why would this have changed?
I don't have the little red book many people reference and my blue owners manual was destroyed. I do have the shop manual, but you guys are just so knowledgable, I thought I'd start with any advice you may have.
Thanks!

It changed cause the engine and tranny don't go back in the exactly same place each time. I know it sounds wierd but the placement isn't that precise. So they had to make the linkage adjustable to make up for it. First of all make sure your ujoint you took off is fully seated and then tighten it down real tight. Then you try and put it in neutral. If it is too far forward still, you have to loosen the turnbuckle nuts and turn the great big nut counterclock to shorten the linkage, and clockwise to lengthen. If you are too far forward you want shorter, too far back you want longer. Once you get it about right, just snug the nuts back up and check it again. The shifter needs to be centered plus or minus 1/16". You will probably have to loosen the nuts again and keep doing this until it is perfectly centered fron to back. Then go ahead and really tighten the two nuts, and try all the gears. But before you put the trunk back in, start the car and make sure you are getting the gears you think you are. I have had it so far out before, the selector said reverse and it was actualy in second. If that happens to you I will tell ya how to fix it, never panic. The thing is a pain in the butt but never get as frustrated as I did.
Go ahead and give that a try a tell me what it is doing and we can go from there.
DT,
Those bolts were tight! The shifter is about centered, between the top of the slot for 2nd gear and the bottom of the slot for 3rd gear. Some final adjustments tonight should get it right.
As far as the stop bolt at the clutch slave, oops I forgot to tighten the large belhousing bolt that goes through the slave bracket. Maybe it's just that simple. I'll check it when I put oil back in (stripped the drain plug) and start it up. I'll adjust as necessary.
Thanks for your help. I'll let you know if I screwed something else up.
