Although there are exceptions, Detroit & Dearborn usually installed the cast valve covers on their motors equipped with solid lifter valve train. There was a reason. Solid lifter valve train, even when adjusted, is a bit more noisy than hydraulically adjusted valve train. The cast valve covers helped to deaden some of the racket.
Eventually a motor with cast valve covers came to be thought of by the public as a hot factory performance motor, so they found their way onto some hydraulic cammed motors too, just for image.
