Took the heads off my 71 today to pleasently find the heads to be closed chambered. I heard that the pistons in a closed chambered motor are flat topped. Mine are dished with valve reliefs cut in. Does anybody know what supposed to be there? Happy holidays to all, and many thanks.

Stock pistons for '71s with closed chambered heads were flat tops with big valve reliefs. But after 29 years, some previous owner probably dug around in the engine. Thats why its really wise to do as you are doing and take the thing apart, to see what you've really got, then replace the suspect stuff. FYI, 9:1 compression is about all you should run with a stock cam & pump gas.
