The A/C hoses under the dash on my '72 Pantera was not hooked up to the evaporator when I bought it. Upon investigation, I find that one hose attaches just fine. The other hose has a female connector that matches the female connector on the evaporator. Am I missing a connector or is it possible that someone had changed the evaporator or hose sometime in the past 29 years? Please advise. Ron

As you've noted there are two hoses that attach to the evaporator. One connects directly. The other, which runs all the way from the drier/condensor at the rear of the car, connects to the expansion valve which is connected to the evaporator. It sounds like your car is missing the expansion valve. Any of the vendors have them but you should also replace the drier prior to charging the system - assuming there are no other obvious AC problems.

Dave is correct. Once you get an expansion valve and carefully screw it into your evaporator (its extremely easy to crack the copper line protruding if you don't use two wrenches and mucho care), you may find a tiny conical filter stuck inside the smaller of the two valve ports. First, be sure it isn't full of junk. Then decide if you'll be running r-12 or R-134a freon. The filter is left out of R-134a installations, reportedly in order to allow slightly higher freon flows, improving the less efficient R-134a performance. You may decide you want to filter trash as before and add such anyway.
