I recently found (then failed to bookmark) some (stock '72) front and rear brake caliper rebuilding videos. Can anyone remember/provide a link to that site?....(or any others?)....TIA....
There was a discussion on the other forum (see link below) and there were numerous caliper rebuild video links as I recall...the one above was done by Asa Jay and is Pantera specific.
That's them!....And more... I caught my rr pad at paper thin when replacing my right axle and bearings, and I'm considering my options to DIY or find/price re-built ones. TIAbundance!
The caliper is a floating caliper which should give you even pressure on both sides...make sure they aren't binding...both pads should wear evenly I believe.
I've also found my lr caliper is bound up as well, and I expect it will look worse!....:-( It's (probably way past) time for 4744 to get ss lines and all 4 calipers rebuilt/replaced as a winter project.....Thanks again, Tom
Definitely time for a rebuild. If you order the pads from Porterfield, make sure the tab is intalled on the inboard pad to lock the piston. Otherwise, you run the possibility of the piston releasing and become inaffective.
Hello I recently bought a 72 Pantera and wonder where i could buy the front calipers repair kits ? (4 pistons calipers) Thank you Best regards from France Philippe
I rebuilt the front and rear calipers. The rears worked fine. The fronts leaked. The bores were in good shape. I believe the rebuild kit was of poor quality. I got tired of dealing with it so I upgraded to the 4-piston Wilwood kit that SACC sells. I was able to keep the stock rotors.
ItalFord, on your leaking calipers after a rebuild, what probably happened is, the pistons were slightly pitted. In ALL Euro calipers I've seen including Cobras, Porsches and other exotics, the pistons are always nickel-plated mild steel rather than stainless. And like plating everywhere, if water gets in the fluid, it pits, then rusts the steel underneath. There is no fix for working guys; on very rare cars, some people have the pistons stripped, welded and re-plated, and I've made billet pistons of stainless bar stock, but both are unreasonably expensive. Only real choice is to find a used caliper that has pistons in better shape. Or upgrade as you did. It was probably not anything you did wrong and also likely not the rebuild kits' fault.
