i am looking for recommendations for a price conscious set of after market brakes. I do not intend to race the car but prefer to be safer than with stock brakes. I have 17" front and 18" rear rims. Appearance is important too.

You can'r beat Scott at SACC Restorations (forum sponsor banner ad at top of page) for price and stuff that fits IMO.
I agree with Joules. Give SACC a call. Some very affordable kits that bolt right on. Stick with the black calipers to remain subtle or red to show them off.
As others have said call Scott at SACC. He knows what he is doing. I bought a project P-car with mismatched Wilwood brake parts sourced from who knows where. Scott helped me sort out what I had and sold me just the pars I needed to complete the system at a very fair price.
