So, the engine and gearbox is to come out this weekend. A Pantera first for me. I read everywhere that it's a good idea to take the rear lid off.

When I look at it, if I remove carb and keep the chain tight, there seems to be plenty of room beneath the lid. Has anybody tried removing engine and gearbox with lid in place? It's not just laziness, it's also to avoid the potential paint chipping experience of removing the lid...

Second question, my untrained eye tells me that if I hook the chain to the two rear bolts of the intake manifold, that will be a good balance point, any views?

I have had mine off a couple of times. It will make it easier, and let more light in too. remove the struts first, well after you know you can push the pins. I know a horror story where an engine installer let the engine lift push up on the roof and raise it. I don't like to work alone because I'm prone to do stupid stuff before I realize it. Tuck a little cloth around the top opening. Have 2-3 people. After Madawgs deck blew off in an ORR I bent my roof drip rail over the head of the pins to keep them from vibrating out. You should drive the car with the deck off too, It is surprising how it feels with the weight off. Bill
Don't know if this helps but here it is.

Two things take the deck off with 2 other people it is a no brainer... Mine is an L type so I had to take the rear bumper off. Also if you do the chain like I did (tight with bolts to hold the hook in place,) use a ratchet strap around the back of the zf and hook it to the lift (cherry picker) and as you come out of the engine bay have someone adjust the strap.
