I have a 1987 GT5S with a 1972 Cleveland block casting code D2AE-CA above starter. There is a "stamping" code WO 18 at the top rear of the block on the driver's side near the bell housing flange. Please advise whether this is or can be the original engine . It had 'Australian" heads on it.The original owner blew the engine with only 16000 miles on the car.I would appreciate any help with this as information appears limited. Thank you -- Dr. Bob Sorrentino - drtino@sbcglobal.net

Bob,

First off, I assume it is a factory GT5S, and not an owner-modified version?

If so, then......

I HIGHLY doubt it is the original factory block.

Just can't imagine a 1972 engine sitting in the Modena factory for 15 years only to be installed in a GT5S.

I ... think ... the GT5S cars all came with Aussie-sourced Clevelands, so the Aussie heads MAY be factory original.

That makes some sense if the stock block was destroyed but the heads were retained.

It's for 100% that they are also delivered whit the 351 Windsor , I have seen a mix of Clevelands and Windsor engines into GT5-S Pantera's.
And the Clevelands come from Australia whit newer casting numbers .

And I believe Amerisport use also Windsor engines.
Caution D2AE-CA is a casting number, the 1972 casting may be found or used in a later application. There should be a cast date code next to the casting. Also DeTomaso stamped a 4 digit number on the back of the block drivers side , it will match engine number info in fender. Ford stamped partial VINs on the back of blocks that were installed in Ford cars but they were 8 digit (year, assembly plant code,last6 of Ford vehicle vin), so easy there to ID a Repurposed engine block. Service blocks will not have any numbers. DavidB and DenisM GT5 cars are just a couple VINs apart and they have the original blocks with DeT stamped numbers with the same spread.

A little more info here on 351C vs 351m/400 difference can be found here.
