Some Pantera owners are moving in the direction of Lambos. I like Rat Rods. Is there a rat rod Pantera out there? I hope not.... Here is a car I saw at the recent Moon X-mas party on December 10, 2005. At least it has a hemi and a Santa! You should have heard this baby run. Dave

LOL.......

Where did he find those rear tires?!!!

Everything is so exaggerated these days, you can tell the guys building cars were influenced by "Hot Wheels" in their youth! Big Grin

Bitchen car Johnny! I love the way the butterflies have been incorporated into the eyes of the skull. And I always love to see a chopped roof like that, knowing how much work is involved to do so, I appreciate the final result, every car looks better chopped like that.

The idea behind the rat rod scene is to build it without spending much money, primer paint, parts from the wrecking yard, etc. Kind of like the way guys did it back in the '50s. I grew up with hot rods assembled by guys without much bread, so its a nostalgia thing for me. Except some rat rod guys have gone overboard in that direction too, some guys have made it a contest to see who can build the rustiest, junkiest car!

Rat rod meetings are fun because the owners dress the part too! Tight tee shirts with a pack of cigarettes stuffed in the rolled up sleeve, Frisco jeans with the pant legs rolled up, side burns, Elvis style hair. It's great to see old dudes and young dudes hanging out together, enjoying the same cars. Anything that brings people together is cool with me, especially when it closes the generation gap.

There are some “rat rod” Panteras and I think they are pretty neat. This one was assembled from a total and complete basket case that was stored in an outside boat loft. He put it together over a number of cold winter months working on it in his driveway. He did it without any manuals and used some old parts from my Pantera. He repaired the badly rusted through body areas that were safety issues but left all the other rusted areas. Never needs washing, never worry about door dings, just drive and enjoy! Way cool!!!

In the late '50s, my older brother had a similar truck. His truck was a Ford, but if you can visualize the truck in your pic painted candy apple red, put the running boards back on & replace the SBC motor with a flat head Ford, you'll have a good idea of what his truck looked like.

He would drive around town with me riding on the outside, standing on the running boards hanging onto the bed or the door. I was all of about 4 years old. Those were the days.

Cool truck Dave, I noticed that SBC has got a cross ram manifold adapted to 6 deuces! Pretty wild. The fuel distribution system is a nice touch too. No mufflers either. I gotta know, are those rear wheels just leaning against the bed, or are they attached to an axle?

My first two cars, a full race Ford Flathead powered 30 Ford and 40 Ford deluxe were both rat rods by today’s standards. http://www.panteraplace.com/page67.htm Back then we didn’t know they were “rats”, we just did the best we could with the little money we had to spend. All of my money went into the engine, running gear and gas to drive it. There wasn’t money for fancy paint jobs and body work!

Aside from the primer, that Pantera looks pretty good. Ten inch Campies too.

Kevin,

It does look pretty good in those pictures but it would cost a fortune to fix the body. The running gear is good, it is safe and the doors stay shut but a lot of the metal is gone. The metal is gone in the usual places but also in large areas that usually do not rust out. I’ve seen other Euro cars with bad rust, including one that was worse than his one. I really, really admire the guy for getting it back on the road no mater what condition it is in. It’s better to have it running than stored in a boat loft in kit form. It took him two weeks to haul all the parts boxes home and sort though them. I’m not sure if I’m expressing this very well but my main point is a running and drivable Pantera is a pretty neat deal even if the body will never be fixed. I think it is possible to own a “rat rod” Pantera and be cool.

I stood in the road to take this shot. The cars line up and only move at a snails pace while cruising. I stopped traffic while I took the shot. Some guy in a nice car blew the horn for me to get out of the way. I got the shot and turned to the crowd and explained that he was just mad because I did not take a pic of his car. We all laughed!
