FRONT HOOD LATCH

I am replacing the front hood latch. I compared my old latch with the NOS unit pictured. The new latch (pictured)has a red arrow pointing to a hole that is not on the old latch. Does anyone know the purpose for the hole?

I do not see any other differences in the latches. (car is an early '73)
