I have a Gilmer belt drive system for my Pantera that the previous owner purchased and never put on.

I currently have my motor and transaxle out of my car and have been considering putting the system on. The old owner’s receipt shows that he paid over $1600.00 for it and I hate to see it just sit in my garage going to waste.

I have read all the old posts that I could find on the Gilmer belt system and found where “NewYorkChris” stated that he had to build a spacer between the bulkhead cover and the firewall for the system to fit.

Link to old Gilmer belt post - pic is about 3/4 of the way down the page

This makes me think that the passenger seat being pushed forward by the bulkhead will even be worse with the Gilmer belt system.

Has anyone done this conversion and is there anyway that I can avoid using a spacer or even reduce the size of the bulkhead with this conversion?

Any assistance or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Garvino, this is a case of gilding a lilly. That 1-1/2" toothed belt drive is capable of powering a Roots blower that takes maybe 100 bhp to turn! The water pump takes maybe 2 bhp on street cars. Nevertheless, if an owner wants to do something irrational, maybe I can contribute.... The engine and ZF can be pushed back in the Pantera chassis up to 4" using kits designed for swapping a longer big block engine into it. It includes different motor mounts and ZF mounts, a rear-sump pan to clear the lower crossmember and a host of little details. Personally, I'd sell the thing to someone with a front-engine hotrod who wants to drive a blower. If you really need one, get a gilmer setup thats designed to fit a Pantera, with a 3/4" wide belt. Hall Pantera used to sell such a thing, and there may be serpentine-belt systems that could be adapted far easier than what you have. Good luck either way.
Bosswrench,

Thanks for your help and all your suggestions.

I have no desire to tackle moving my motor and transaxle farther back in my car. I also don’t really have a need for the Gilmer belt system. It just came with my car and I thought it might be kind of neat to use. I have never seen one on a car before so I did not realize how much extra room it would take.

My real desire is to reduce the size of my bulkhead and the hump in the middle of the car. I am starting to think that the price I could potentially sell the Gilmer belt system for would be a good down payment on a nice bulkhead reduction kit.

Thanks again.
