I would hit up the Mustang  forums for such a swap!   Finding the AOD trans these days for a SBF is also no easy feat!   I think the "control line" or linkage and adjustment is the crucial deal.  Shifter needs another position notch I think. Your LC has column shift?  If so, there is a piece in the column that can be swapped out to allow the OD position to be engaged or not.

PS It would be interesting to find out which version of the C6 was used in the LC!!!  There is light duty, medium, and heavy duty versions, basically different numbers of clutch discs in first and high gears.   Small aluminum tag perhaps on the side servo cover could reveal all.   If you can get that, I can look it up and figure out what you have..... HD, medium, or yawn! 

You should have a C6 in the car if it is origianl. The AOD has the same power handling capability  as the C4 which generally speaking is a 5L or smaller engine package.

The AOD is not built on the C4 case. The bell house is integral to it.

The C6 along with the FMX (351w) is for larger displacement engines and generally thought of as a 428 (7L) transmission.



The C4 is the smallest size of those. The AOD is usually used also in the 5L engine packages. It has a wider gear spread and is not really considered a "high performance" transmission.



What you MIGHT want to consider is using a modern "Ford transmission like the 6R80? It is roughly the size of the C6 but with an add on in the tail shaft for the two extra gears. It is a 6 speed with a dual overdrive.

It is designed for the newer modular engines so it will need an adapter to the 351C bolt pattern. It also uses an external bolt on flange on the output rather then the slip in installed u-joint. That can be changed.

It is also designed to be controlled by the current engine CPU's. A stand alone controller is available aftermarket as are the adapters necessary.



The advantages of using the 6R80 is that it will handle over 1,000 hp out of the box even in standard production form. It uses internal clutches that are computer controlled. Standard first gear is 4.11 and there are two over drives so it is a very good combination of hard acceleration from stopped and low rpm high speed cursing.



Just google Ford 6r80 and there is an abundance of information on that transmission on the internet as well as aftermarket parts that you will need.

The only consideration on fitment is going to be at the rear of the transmission. It is wider there then the C6 and the tunnel in the floor pan may need to be stretched and the rear transmission mount modified?



To modernize an automatic transmissioned car today that is Ford powered, that is where I would go.

The C-6 is considered a grenade-proof auto trans, but its also extremely heavy and its efficiency as a 'power-deliverer' is lowest of its contemporaries- like the C-4. You'll likely gain performance and fuel mileage from an upgrade due to both these factors, especially with one with an extra gear and a lock-up feature.  Longchamps and Deauvilles are not sports cars but every little bit helps!
