Simple? Maybe. You need to install a relay for that update. The stock switches won't handle the load without it.

You definitely need to install headlight relays if you haven't already. You might as well install a complete relay kit while you're at it.

I have Cibie's on my Mustang and they're great! I bought some 7" round euro projector headlights off ebay last year for the Pantera, but they're not as bright as the Cibies. As soon as I run out of other projects on the Pantera, I'm going to order more Cibies.

I really thought I might be able to get away without the conversion. The two 55 watt bulbs will only draw 8.5 to 9 amps.
Thats why I selected the low wattage type instead of the 90/100 watt type.

The relay conversion is quite simple and an important safety upgrade. There are too many stories in Pantera land of electical fires and smoking wiring under the dash. As a matter of fact, I was driving home from work in the Pantera one night when smoke quickly filled the cabin. Thankfully, I pulled over and shut her down before anything burst into flame. Too much current running through those 35 year old switches and wiring harness. The relay kit was the best $50-60 I've ever spent!

BTW, I purchased my relay kit from PCNC member Rich Boshcert (richless2@earthlink.net). It came complete with fuses, mounting screws, a laminated wiring diagram, and a laminated legend that fits inside the fuse block cover. And, if you're in the SF Bay Area, Rich and I will help you install it. We had an informal relay tech session over a couple of weekends and did something like 6 cars.

I just installed Rich's relay set this weekend in #5774. It took me about 3 hours using his instructions, factory wiring diagrams and Bill Taylors diagrams on Pantera Place. Very straightforward and relatively easy. I'd be glad to help anyone who would like to do this conversion.

The relay kits are $70 plus shipping(around $10 for the box,postage etc).The kits are like the Mosley relays except this one also does the windows.The kits come with everything you need ,wire,hardware,connectors,instructions,etc,and a laminated schematic of the wireing changes. Currently(bad pun i know)working on updating the instructions to make it a little easier,and making a template for the mounting holes.Also working on a relay for the blower motor.Also working on a carpeted cover for the relays.Thanks for the interest,Richard

A slightly different concept on a good idea, but this is roll your own. Was able to fit the hi and low beam plus radiator fans into the fuse panel. Kept things a little cleaner.

Isn't it amazing how much rewiring is necessary for realy a simple upgrade to use relays?

I'm almost finished. I still need to put a relay on the fuel pump and find out what happened to the tach with the ignition relay.

Not to outdo anyone but I also put in power mirrors, power seats, self dimming mirror, overhead speaker console, Piaa 2" lights in the GTS spoiler, VDO gauges, solid state Motorsport ignition, the battery in the floor of the trunk more interior lights in the footwells, power locks, a third brake light under the sugarscoop, and 85/100w H4 Vadar headights. Few. I'm sure I forgot something but I'm dizzy now and have to rest anyway.

There has to be a couple of hundred dollars just in wire ends.

If the factory did this the price of the car would have been another $30,000. I should be thankfull that the car can be electrically upgraded.

I second EDM's comments, that is one clean install! Any tips?

This is my relay set up that I designed, build and install in the Dallas area.
Tip, start at the relays and build from there and tie the wires so it has a nice flow to it.

I am an Aircraft tech so I tend to be very tidy.
I also do light Pantera restorations.

well, i am going to need some of this stuff..... i will be in touch with a few of you guys!

i picked up rich boshcert's relay kit, and must say it is very nicely done, well worth the bucks.

but.........., as i understand the wiring diagrams, what is the point of passing the headlights current through the old fuses? just seems a bit more efficent to hardwire from the relay #12 wires straight to the headlights.

the only difference i see is that previously each headlights hi and low beam was protected by an 8amp fuse, (total of 4 fuses) where if wired directly from the relay the lamps would then be protected by 2 20amp fuses (one for the lows and one for the highs) which should be more than enough unless your running aircraft landing lights.

also, you get to pull and toss out fuses 1, 2, 5 and 6 (though a bit of rewire for the hi-beam indicator is needed) plus you get rid of some of the wiring mess around the old fuse box.

am i missing something here?????????
