Identify this opening?

I took out my front trunk carpet and battery.
Noticed this opening right by the positive battery cable and to the back and side of the battery.
This is a 1972 Pre L.
Any ideas what should go there?

nothing goes there.everyone i have seen has the same opening under the felt.

Nothing from the factory, but I used it to run the wires from the amp I mounted behind the battery to the stereo.
