This is pretty common, Jay. I get it on my '72L's fuel gauge from time to time. Seems to be condensation, possibly brought on by the weather. A lightbulb in these gauges would heat things up and keep the interior dry, but unfortunately, there are none. If you add a light, that would probably fix the difficulty.
