Mystery sticker

My sticker is still on my 74 air filter assembly but.... 20% of it is missing and it is barely legible. I don't know what the last three digits are. It is made of thick stock white paper fiber, yes paper, with thin black print. It reads D4AF-9600???. According to the Pantera master parts catalog the number 9600 is the part number for the entire air filter assembly. Part number 9601 is the air filter. Chuck

Thanks for the reply- very interesting. I was thinking, though- wouldn't a parts number sticker like that be on it only if it was purchased later at the parts dept.? Is it possible your air cleaner assembly is not the same one that was on the car as delivered brand new?

Why is it running an EGR valve?

I didn't know that there was anything non-stock in the engine bay. Which piece is the egr (engine gas recirc valve, right?)

Do you know what the air cleaner sticker is supposed to have written or pictured on it?

From that view it looks like there is an egr plate and valve sandwiched between the carb and the manifold.

The 2-1/2 inch round cylinder shape that you can see is the vacuum diaphram for it.

These cars were exempt from that type of equipment new but that doesn't make them exempt from passing emissions testing in some states. In my experience that is impossible without installing smog, but this must be a CA car.

The orange 71/74 Pantera Master Parts Catalog lists an EGR valve for a 73 Pantera. Part number 9D475-A, in section 90. Chilton's Auto Repair Manual 1972-1979, page C564, says that 73-74 Fords use an EGR system.

My guess on the missing "sticker" would be that it is either the ford engineering number sticker or picking number sticker that was on the air cleaner for inventory purposes while at a Ford parts warehouse or factory assembly line. A paper sticker, rectangular, white with black lettering. Less durable than the orange dot on the valve cover. I doubt you would be able to find a replacement.

7260 is right with the numbers, the rest of the number is probably something like "AA" or "AB".

If you could clean off the glue I don't think any one would know there was a sticker there. cleaning the glue is eaier said than done.

Go to one of the mustang forums like THE BOSS 302 EXCHANGE ...there is a forum for BOSS 351 ..those guys can indetify the sticker .. unless it was exclusive to Detomaso

Good ideas, guys. I will ask on mustang 302 and mustangforums. I did find an interesting mustang air cleaner sticker that says "FRONT"

So, maybe the Pantera sticker was a part number, or said "front", or....? Anyway, it is fun sleuthing it out...

so, on a Pantera, should it be "front", a parts number, an autolite sticker, maybe a Motorcraft sticker...interesting (to me at least!) that Ford affixed multiple different stickers to the air cleaners on 351c cars....

just saw a shot on TV of a similar engine and there was a sticker in the same place that said "front".
don't know if this helps.

was the "front" sticker on a Pantera's air cleaner or a Mustang's?

now that you mention it, I think it was a Mustang. sorry, that sticker just 'stuck' out.
