General frustration: Doesn’t anybody make real good shocks for Panteras?

Here’s my story. When I bought the car it had original shocks (I think) on it. They were just like I like them, firm, hard, felt like a race car. Unfortunately one had clonking sound and the rears were not fully up to damping so on the freeway the rear end could make a big soft wobble. I was told I could just put new oil in, unfortunately they were too “early” for that, they could not be disassembled.

So I had to buy new shocks. Precision Proformance were recommended to me, they have the Aldan shocks. Looked good with a nice knob on it with the markings “1” to “6”, and height adjustable. So how could they not be perfect, I assumed that “1” would be softer than my current shocks and that “6” would be harder, and I would just have to experiment to get what I wanted. But I was wrong. To make a long story short, they were way too soft. Even at hardest, even after I had them sent to Precision and revalved, even after I received new harder springs, they were just terribly soft. And I was not just me being difficult, a friend that drove behind me commented that my car looked as if it had no damping at all. In the end I wanted to return them, but Precision were more and more unreachable, and never made good on this lousy product. They now lie on a shelf in my garage as a reminder of the only product I ever bought overseas (US) that the vendor didn't accept responsibility for Roll Eyes

Next try are my current yellow Konis from Dennis Quella. And they are a lot better than the Aldans, the car is enjoyable again. But frankly, not as good as with the originals. And to adjust the rebound, you have to take them off, no knob or screw, a difficult push down and turn system. Height adjustment is easy though.

How come these ”race-type” aftermarket shocks are so terribly soft? Someone joked that that was just because you Americans are so used to soft sprung cars, that these felt firm to you… Wink Again, the Konis are OK’ish, but I still miss the race car feeling the original shocks gave me. And ideally a shock you can adjust while it and the wheel is still on the car? Does anybody have the same view on this as me?

Mikael,

Read this article for a good primer on shocks:

The Koni's appear to be one of the best values out there for an 'inexpensive' quality shock. I bought Koni's for my car from Pantera East, and will put them on as soon as I finish my engine rebuild.

Call Dennis and order some stiffer springs for your shocks. That should take care of your problem. I'll PM you with a document I put together with the spring rates that different people run on their Panteras.
I think it is a spring problem as well. I have Aldan shocks on mine and the suspension is hard as a rock. No one following my car will see any bounce or sway...I guarantee it.

I've been thinking of trying some new springs to get things a little more compliant, so I want to go in the opposite direction as you do at this point.

It would be nice for someone in the know to chime in about spring rates and where to get replacement springs that will fit.

Later, Mooso.

This link covers spring rates http://www.panteraplace.com/page212.htm and where to get springs.
