I've got a set of front wheels that have been repainted Argent, then cleared, and appear quite original. I purchased another set for the rear that had been powder-coated ALMOST the same shade, but most assuredly "off" in both texture (too smooth) and color.

Question: Can I paint the correct shade OVER the powder coating and expect good adhesion? Any special tips or techniques?

Thanks in advance folks.

You can paint over the top of the powdercoat, no problem. First you have to key the surface with Scotchbrite until the whole wheel has a matt finish. Make sure you get into all the little corners. Then thoroughly degrease it with pre-paint wipe.

Then shoot the silver base, then clear coat. Try not to lay the clear on too thick. The more you put on, the easier it chips off. Dont even consider a rattle can.

You will probably not paint the inside of the wheel, but if you do, do not paint the hub mounting surface.

Good advise Johnny..... I could only add that clean is important. I use hot soapy water with Tide detergent, wear a plastic glove while wet scuffing the surface. I would use a high solids clear.. PPG 2010 or Dupont Chromaclear. I would think that if you had them prepped properly, a local body shop could base clear them for about the same cost as you would pay for the materials.
