Hi,

I have just subscribed to the forums of PI.
I am looking into buying an early Pantera , preferably with the chrome bumpers or a US delivery GTS. I live in Belgium so the Pantera I am looking for will be shipped to Europe.
I scanned the PI section on cars for sale and there are 2-3 cars that intrest me, but when I contact the sellers by e-mail or phone it seems to go dead quite fast. I am guessing that it is because they feel uncomfortable with overseas transactions or perhaps my English is not as good as I think it is, or perhaps I am asking the wrong questions...I mean its not that I am French or anything, right ;o)
So any advice you can give me -on buying a Pantera- is great. Advice on life in general is fine also but not pressing for the moment. The Pantera would be for my private use and will sit happily next to an old school 911.
I would also be looking into contracting a regional rep of PI to do a PPI (expenses paid ofcourse).

Thanks for any help/advice.

Michel

Hi, and welcome to the Forums.
I too had troubles that you had, I had picked one and all was great untill they found out I would not pick it up in person and was shipping it out of the USA to Australia.
However I did find one and had it shipped to me. It came the week before Christmas, so Santa Claus came early.
When you do get it, your life will feel that little bit more complete ! Smiler
Oh and the guys on this forum are fantastic ! A real great bunch of guys from all walks of life.

WELCOME Michel,

It never ceases to AMAZE me how good our overseas members English is - yours is excellent.

As for one of us doing an expenses paid PPI - pre purchase inspection - I don't think that will happen. Wink

Most of us will refuse your money, but gladly do the inspection!

They say misery loves company, and so when a newbie wants to join us in trying to maintain/improve one of these Italian rust-prone hot rods, we are more than happy to help reel you into our group.

With our wonderful Bush-destroyed dollar giving your Euro so much more buying power, we are seeing (too many) Panteras leave our shores to return to Europe.

Nonetheless, we are here to help. Do you seek a no-issues car, or are you willing/wanting to do work on your purchase?

Yes, some sellers will back away from overseas shipping. In my opinion, they are not too smart, as they are blocking out a market that is showing strong interest and has readily available funds. Perhaps you should do all the advance research, pick a shipping method and determine the cost and inform potential sellers of your solution to shipping.

Tell us a bit more of what kind of car you want, and more advice will follow...

Again, welcome and good luck

Larry

Larry,

Thanks for that.
We are used to rust buckets in Belgium. Not only do we get tons of rain our government also has a contract with a maker of road salt. So every winter (regardless of temperature) they dump tons of the stuff on our roads.
I am looking for a non-issue car. Having said that I am not afraid of some minor work as I restored the 911 myself; but I am currently building an MX5 track car and have my hands full with that. I love the early Pantera's with the short bumpers (I guess that is the pre-impact bumper time). It is important to me that the car is close to original but any improvement visual or technical is welcomed if it is done professionally. So a pre-L car that has the short bumpers but with the engine and gearboxed polished or painted goes for me. I am a sucker for the original campo's and a white car gets me drooling but really, black, yellow, white, I do not care. Red is tricky for me. I am a fan of Meguiars and man does red suffer from sun and rain...
Good histroy is also important to me. Again no issues if there are gaps but a strong history is necessary. I keep my cars (except my daily drivers; and even there I am picky on whom to sell it to). The MX5 has been with me for 16 years, the 911 for 7. So yes the Pantera goes to Euro; but what a carring home it will get ;o)
Shipping and customs has been pre-arranged.
I will come by boat to Antwerp, and I have three or four east coast destinations, trouble is my knowledge of American geography lets me down slightly so I never investigated west coast pick up and how that would work.

Hope this helps.

Hi Michel.

I live in Canada and imported a Pantera from Arizona a few months ago. If you have any questions, please contact me privately. I would be happy to assist in any way possible. When I started looking, this list - and the POCA list - were both instrumental in assisting with my purchase.

As well, I have relatives living in Belgium and Luxembourg and I would love for there to be a Pantera in their neighborhood. As much as we Canadians like our fast cars and beer, I can tell you that Belgium is a VERY similar culture.

Best of luck,
Erik
Most people write exactly like they talk and you write the English language well. I don't think that is the issue.

I agree wholeheartedly with Larry on the ovesees issue with one thing to add. Also assure the seller of the method of payment. I think a lot of sellers assume there is just too much risk and work involved to sell overseas so they close their mind to it. Not smart at all.
I can relate to the payment issue; although I have not actually got round to the payment part. It has stopped on two or three occassions when I explained that I am from Belgium and will be shipping it overseas.
Erik, I have made progress -sort of- on a Canadian car near Toronto, the black one from Brian listed on Pantera.net I am mailing you privately.

Yes, the classic car scene in Italy is very small. But what they do have on offer is top dollar. Italians treat their cars with little respect in general. The same goes for the Spanish. Although Spain has got a very reputed restorer of all things great. The name slips me though.
