My father owned a 1971 Pantera and we unfortunately had to sell it in mid-late 1992. It was sold in Tucson, az at a company called "Haney Brothers" on Speedway Blvd. I was just wondering if anyone on this board knows what has become of our beloved car. The car was red with, I believe, a Hall Pantera big bore exhaust system. That is all the info I have on it. Any info you could give would be very much appreciated! I have a old web page with some pics of it.. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Track/8599/detomaso.html

We need the last four digits of the VIN. number. IT's a nice looking car! I know how sentimental we can be about cars. There is a '67 GTA fastback from my past youth that I would love to find. I just finished blackening out my sidelight bezels last week. I think it makes a world of difference to the looks. I also left out the gaskets, makes them look thinner, sleeker. What would I be sealing against anyway?? Anywho, give us the numbers if you have them, and we'll start the "Hunt" for you. Regards, Marlin.

Hey Marlin...What did you use to blacken out the bezels?...Curt
Thanks Marlin!

I will try and find the vin. I am not sure if it is possible to find. Unfortunately, I was too young back then to know what an incredible car we had. I own a blown and intercooled 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra, making +/- 385 rwhp and 390 rwtq. The only car I would ever sell my baby for is a '71-74 Pantera. I've been keeping my eyes open, but the market the way it is my car isn't worth as much as it was 2 years ago

Off topic, can anyone tell by the pictures any "add ons" the car had? Again, I was a "noobie" back then and didn't even know what had been done to it. My father knew everything there is to know about Panteras, but he died in late 1992. Just curious.

Thanks again for your replies and taking the time to read this.

Thanks Kevin! Good idea.

Forgot to mention...the car had a hole on the dash to the right of the speedometer, and the former owner covered it with some type of sticker about a pantera event. We were going to fix, but didn't have the time. The car still had the sticker on it when sold.

Thanks

Hi Curt! I just washed the bezels in the kithchen sink with dish soap, rinsed them in slightly hot water(evaporates fast). Then I srayed (can) them with SATIN black ENAMAL. Enamal is good because it does NOT "eat" into the plastic or that fake chrome, yet sticks well. I covered them well, with at least three coats. I like the SATIN finish best, as I believe that GLOSS is TOO shiny(if that is possible). Use any brand, mine was PLASTI-KOTE, sold at Orchard Supply Hardware. I have noticed, on the sights (of pictures), that a lot of owners have blackened them out. And the gaskets are just one more thing to collect dirt. Regards, Marlin.

sometimes, if you contact your states department of motor vehicles and give them your dad's info, name, dob, address etc. they can do a search of all vehicles registered to that person. I tried to find my 70 Mach 1 a few years back. I found the original window sticker in my dad's papers and it was complete except for the bottom corner where the VIN was printed. It had torn when the sticker was removed. I even tried calling the original salesman at the dealer. (He had been a friend of my dads) He still worked at the dealership only he explained that the dealership had changed hands a couple of times since 1970 and there had been a fire in the records storage area. He did say that he kept a personal notebook of every car he had ever sold and called me back the next day to say he found the notebook and the entry was "70 yellow Mach1 and the date sold to my dad the price $3500" but no VIN!!! I called motor vehicles in New Jersey and gave them the above info, unfortunately their records didn't go back that far. 10 years might still be in the ballpark in your state. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Gary, I did contact my local DMV, and that is how I found out about the car still being in Arizona. Unfortunately, the girl at DMV could not release any more information about the car. She even told me that the current owners name, address, tele. # was on record, but I couldn't have it. She wasn't supposed to tell me the information that she did, but she was really cool.

Re non-stock parts on Dad's '71 Pantera: someone blacked out all the chrome and stainless steel trim; the engine has aftermarket aluminum val;ve covers, air cleaner & a Holley carb. The engine screen is missing since it didn't clear the oversized air cleaner element. Those may be non-stock seats and has 3" racing seat belts. I saw what appears to be a 'participant-plaque' on the dash and radio speakers set into the door panels. May have aftermarket exhausts- '71 tips tended to stick up at a sharper angle. Altogether, a nice, clean average pre-L Pantera with stock tomatoe-red paint & stock Campagnolo wheels. All this aftermarket stuff is undoubtably of better quality than the stock parts they replace and most is still quite available.Expect to pay maybe $24-$34,000 for a similar rust-free SW car unless there's engine/trans damage internally. Note- even if you find the serial #, many owners couldn't be bothered with sending in their serial numbers to the DeTomaso Registry, so there may be zero records, except at the factory in Italy.
Did you ever find out the serial number on your car? I just bought a 1971 red Pantera from Utah; #1905. I know very little about it other than it was highly modified. Very little on it is stock. Some one has put a lot of work into it. It now has the GTS body with the 1985 leather GT interior. I know very little about it's history but the odometer has a little over 12k.
