Porterfield Pads and spring plate retainer

Here is the question(problem). The ends of the Porterfields are about 1/4 shorter than the originals. The originals come to more of a point and the Porterfields are with a 1/4" flat-cut end. The problem for me is that while they fit, they dont push the spring retainer plate "down" far enough, and it touches my new rotors. (the are vented and just a shade larger in diameter)........ So the question is, has anyone else had this and what did they do?

I can "modify" the spring plate a bit, or, can you just run w/o it?

I noticed the book calls it a dust shield. Is that truely what it is? (and not to keep some tension on the pads)
