Sorry to say, but you might need to find someone with smaller hands. Try taking the driver's seat out. It will give you some extra room to get your body and arm in a better position.
Hi Steeler, I find it much easier to get the tach out if you take out the speedo first, then you have a nice big hole to put your hand through to the back of the tach, Cheers, Tim.
Thanks for the feedback JFFR and Tim, that’s what I thought. I was hoping for some “Quick fix”, I am trying to couple the blue wire for the Pantera Electronics push button starter kit. I have plenty of time. Thanks again.
I recently installed one of those kits in a friend's Pantera. I used long (12") needle nose pliers. I was able to reach the connector on the back of the tach, so I didn't have to remove the tach.
BTW, that kit is really nice. If the engine dies (like during a cold start with no choke), you don't have to cycle the key....you just push the start button. Pretty cool.
Easy - remove the seat - lay on the floor - head up under the dash - hand up the r/hand side of the tach - reach over the heater air pipe - pull off the blue / black wire - fit the piggy back wire - push back on the back of the tach - rebuild, no problem
The dual pod is a little easier to work with, the single pod is another story altogether. In fact getting the tach and speedo out is actually the easier part with the single pod. Getting them tightened back in is a different story.
I have found that to reinstall, if you install wing nuts on the studs, you can rotate them by their wings with a long screw driver.
The frustrating thing is that you can see everything from beneath the dash but you can't touch the original thumb screws with your hands and get a grip on them.
For installing that one new wire to the back of the tach for the P-E push button start, you may want to install a terminal screw on the new dual tab on the tach to insure it does not disconnect itself after reinstall. Been there done that.
The speedo goes back in first. Tighten it up via the tach hole, then the tach goes in since it has a little more room from under the dash and no duct to deal with.
You can get the wingnuts from Home Depot. They happen to stock them in stainless. Strange, but true.
