Hello all,

I'm a new member and bought recently a Pantera in the US (#1571). I want to register the car in France and was wondering what to do with the tacho that need to be changed from miles into km. Is it still possible to buy km tacho or is there somebody that can convert a miles into KM tacho? Thanks for any advice you might have.

I think you are looking for a "Speedo" (tach is engine revs). The Euro speedometers are not widely available but can be found. You might have some luck with Rolland in Germany. It's not as simple as just changing the speedometer face, you also require a different reduction gear for the ZF where the speedo cable is attached.

Maybe- if you're lucky. There are two different ratio speedo units and two mechanically different right angle gear-drives back on the ZF. Lettered on the back of the speedo case in green ink will be either '1210 giro' or '1610 giro' denoting the number of revs per mile the instrument uses. The right angle drives can be either VDO or Borlotti and their threaded nut sizes vary, requiring a matching speedo cable. Their ratios are stamped on the blind end of the angle drive.

Possibly an easier, cheaper and less potentially confusing solution than changing speedos is to find a local speedo shop that will simply change your current instrument's face from mph to kph. As can be seen from the previous post photo, the metric face also has the mph values on an inner circle, so a shop may also be able to make one for you.
Does the odometer turn in miles, or KMs? I would expect it's miles if you just re-lettered the face. Observers would assume it is kilometres, in which case the car has now travelled 37% less distance, and will continue to do so from now on. However your observed fuel consumption per "indicated km" will be terrible! Big Grin

If the starting point of the speedo and ending point are at the same places on the dial, all you need to do is make the conversion on the face of the dial like Tunnelport492 did. You won't need to use an adapter gear. The adaption is in the correct graduation of the markings on the dial.

The speedometer is disassemblable and the the needle and face plate are easily removed and then reinstalled.

You just pull off the indicator needle with you fingers. Then remove the two screws in the faceplate. Then reverse the process to reassemble.

The chrome rim and glass come off by bending the tabs on the chrome rim carefully, then reversing the process.

It's no big deal. You don't even need a shop to do it. You can do it all at your desk. I did. No problems at all. Lets you clean the inside of the glass cover then.

Make sure you clean off all your fingerprints before you reassemble it.

As an aside Tara McGill often sells km faceplates.

Hello Peter, I haven't heard from Stig but a german owner has asked for an exchange, I have 186 176 and 2H in black ink on the rear of my speedometer, and have no idea regarding the ratio it denotes, to my shame I also don't know who Tara McGill is?? Help

Thank you for the info, I now recall the name having asked some questions to Hall regarding a radiator and stainless water piping I bought from them and MD kindly shipped to England for me.

As for the speedo I have a solution and am to exchange mine for a MPH one with a Pantera owner from Germany, grand forum, and thanks to all for information.

To get a correct reading you will most likely have to change the angle drive gear on the ZF, they come in two variants a 1.1:1 and 1:1.

I know everyone says just change the faceplates, but my GT5 was a Euro car with changed faceplate and was well over 10% out until I did the angle drive. The way you are going is the best as a changed faceplate alone speedo will still rack up at the rate of miles on the odometer not Kms.

Hello all,
after having finished our speedo swap both Peter and me are very happy with the results. Just a short report:
Attached pls find a table of the contemporary De Tomaso parts catalogue. Based on this table (64) we found out that both of us have Borletti and not VDO driving gears. The Borletti driving gear comes in two ratios. One is marked 50-0804 and the other 50-0806. My gearbox is a 1031002001. My angle drive is marked 50-0804, so it is the 1 Rev = 1 m type. Peter´s angle drive is marked 050-0806, so 1 Rev = 1,36 m. So we knew that we had to swap the angle drives, too. After doing that the speedos work perfectly and show the mls/kms they should...

From an initial enquiry to ask for an exchange of
odometers, I must say that the advice from people on the forum has been a great help.

Also I would like to thank Wolfgang who did all the hard work in road testing, finding an expert to correct a small problem in my speedometer at a very reasonable cost, and the trust involved in the exchange of valuable parts, when we have never met or know about one another.

The De Tomaso community seems a very nice place to belong to.
