I have disassembled the steering rack to replace the passenger side bearing and I am not sure if the original one is supposed to be removed before installation of the new one. There seems to be enough space to install the new one without removing the original.
Anybody done this repair/up-grade that could comment?

I removed mine so that the new one could go into the same location using the same set screw. I dont like to have extra parts in a system. Any good auto shop will have a puller that will work to remove the old bushing. AutoZone will sell you the tool, you use it and return it for no charge.
Yes, remove it. It will never fit it the right location if you don't. There is a steel bearing collar that needs be removed before putting the new on in it's place. I used a long rod and tapped mine out.

I also replaced mine with a solid bronze bushing which is as solid as a rock and works great.

Also, forget about filling the steering gearbox with gearoil, they don't seal worth a shit. Just pack the hell out of it with axle grease and then seal it the best you can.

Marlin has them....

Nice bushing Jon. The one I got didn't have the groves.

I started with 90W oil after the replacement but after about 2 months of garage floor & frame clean up everyday, I packed it with grease.

Coz, 90W oil is the best lube for gears, but since we can't stop the rack from leaking, grease is the next best solution. Considering this, when I made the bushing I added a lube reservoir groove for the grease. I don't know if the vender bushings have that feature.
