Looking to put on a Robertshaw 333 thermostat. The existing old thermostat has the gasket on top of the thermostat, but the Pantera technical information folder says the gasket should go on the block opening before the thermostat is installed. this would mean the gasket would be between the block and the thermostat.
Looking for some guidance on which way is correct. Thanks!

...there is a 'spot-face' the thermostat sits down in. The Thermostat goes in first, lays flush, the gasket goes on TOP, then the Housing.
I use a gasket 'Dressing' just in Case, You Dig?

Believe I am tracking MJ. So the photo above showing how it was installed previously is correct?
Thermostat sits bare on the block, then gasket dressing, then gasket. Then the coolant tube bolts back up on top.

Agreed Larry. Now that ive completed the job, once you scrape off the gasket and remove the thermostat it becomes very clear why the gasket would not go down first. that screenshot was from the original Ford technician service manual.
Be sure the bypass is in there, if not punch one in. Also consider the 'overdrive' pulley, slightly smaller diameter than the standard w/p pulley. We've sold many and guys love them.
thanks I believe the original one was still in there from when my dad bought the car in 74. I removed it and used the bypass that perfectly mated with the Robertshaw.
