When installing my windshield, I've been told not to use silicone sealer, but to instead use black strip caulking. Does anyone have any experience or wisdom they can share on the subject ie; how thick a bead to use etc.? I,ve also been told to use nothing and go after any subsequent leaks with silicone as they arise. Any thoughts? Thanks, E.T.

The stock windshield glass supplied both by the factory and the aftermarket, is too small to compress the gasket enough to prevent all leaks. In addition, water will be trapped between the lower edge of the gasket and the body metal, and eventually the water will rust through. One such owner showed up at a tech session with inoperative electrics, and we found his relays full of rusty water! The only way I've found to prevent both leaks & corrosion is to thoroughly clean the window channel, paint it with several coats of rust-preventive of your choice and let them dry thoroughly, then install the glass & gasket. Lift the outer flap of the gasket after installation and inject LOTS of clear silicone. The silicone should be run all the way across the bottom side to side and up both windshield posts, and finally across the top for about a foot or as much as you can reach. Leave the center unsealed as it seems not to leak there and is extremely hard to reach without causing body damage from leaning on fenders, hood etc. Some vendors have 'flush-mount' glue-in windshield kits for the Pantera which fix the leak problem, but they all require welding strips of body metal into the too-small body opening to decrease the opening's size so the window has something to touch!
