Peter,

Many years ago, I ordered a set of Pantera u-joints from Powertrain Industries in Southern California. I was curious about the origin when I ordered them, so I asked the guy taking the order what they were from. He told me they were driveshaft u-joints from a 1970's Toyota 2WD pickup truck. He said that as the Toyota joints were "a thou' or two" longer than the OEM Pantera u-joints, they supply them with snap rings that are thinner by the appropriate amount.

Since then, I've heard the same thing from a number of people but I don't know of anyone who's actually bothered to confirm it. That's because Powertrain Industries doesn't increase the price because the box says "Pantera" on it, rather than "Toyota". It could be a story but it might not hurt to take an OEM u-joint and snap ring to a driveshaft shop to see if it's true.
David thanks for the info.

up to putting on the post this afternoon I had had no luck, Hall Pantera only knew they were from "The factory", the ones they sold anyway.

But I have found a company in the UK that say they recognise the UJ by the following dimensions
1, cup diameter is 32mm
2 span between cups when in place is 106mm
They are listed as a FIAT UJ.

They are posting a pair out to me tomorrow.
But they are expensive at £36+17% tax then postage!

I hope they are the correct ones !
my quick searches today for U joint info looks like the imperial 1.187" (30,2mm) X 4.187" (106,3mm) are sold WITH cap sleeves and thin snap rings.

I stumbled accross a "CarQuest"'s GMB UJ cataloge
http://www.carquestprofessiona...9_UJ_FullCatalog.pdf
Page 40 list the Pantera as thier 220-2010
and page 201 gives the diminesions as 1.260" (32mm) X 4.173" (106mm)

Summit shows available at $21

Peter, the UJ is a standard ZF part for Tractors Smiler

When I had rebuild mine with UJ imported from the US I took them to a local shop that rebuilds Brake, Clutch and Driveshaft parts etc. to have them balanced and the owner was laughing when I told him about the hassle to get (expensive) parts imported from the US. He showed me their stock of those exact UJ and probably he had 30-40 of them in a Box. Standard part for ZF Auxilary output on many Tractors, so readily available and much cheaper than paying shipping and Import duty. But unfortunately too late in my case. Should be no problem to find them in the UK as well I suppose, otherwise let me know and I can send 4 from DK. (after 20/1 when I get back home)
Spicer halfshafts were gold-alodined while stockers were a greenish hammertone. Spicers use Ford F-500 truck u-joints. Stock halfshafts use even larger ones! Most aftermarket joints once sold for stock-replacement did in fact need super-thin retaining rings, and some combinations had tolerance stack-ups that needed the thinnest rings carefully stoned down even further.

On one car, I had to take the cross out of a u-joint assembly and wheel-grind the ends down a bit, re-chamfer and then regrease them. Works fine as long as you don't turn them blue during grinding. Note that brand new u-joints (any brand, any car) only have shelf-storage grease on them in the box- not nearly enough grease to run 300 bhp through! Or at least not for long...

from what I have read/found online,

the Spicer replacement driveshafts would use the imperial size Spicer 3-2-159 yoke with dimensions to accept the 1.187" (30,2mm) X 4.187" (106,3mm) UJs

where the original driveshaft yoke was the 32mm X 106mm UJs

the discription of your "new" UJ appears just to be wrong A/B dimesnion

Latest information, I called my supplier and informed him that the differences were

107.9 instead of 106.2mm

and the height of the cup (E) is 3mm shorter than original. 18mm instead of 21mm.

His reply was that the 107.9 would compress to 106.2 when fitted and he was correct.

He also said that the 3mm difference was unimportant and would be perfectly acceptable.

not being an expert at sod all, I just have to believe him. I just need to repair the driveshaft which was damaged whenever years ago that the old UJ failed, fingers crossed.
so the extra lenght of the cross was due to the cups not being pressed together.

too late now, but working with similair assemblies, removing the grease zerk to allow air to escape could have helped when installing. (but there would have been the "spring" of the rubber seals also)

can you share the make and part # of the ones you installed?
