I'm headed out of town tomorrow morning, camping at Jalama Beach in Santa Barbara County. So I won't be on the BB this week end. I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a great week end, and share a story.

You So Cal owners, if you have never been to Jalama Beach, it's a great destination, driving up the Coast to where Hwy 101 curves inland, exit 101 onto Hwy 1 to Lompoc, then left at the 15 mile marker onto 15 miles of wonderful curvy asphalt to the ocean. Theres a small camp store that sells the world famous "Jalama Burger" (their ad copy, not mine). It costs $6 for a day pass. I've been asked to bring so much camping gear that it won't fit in the Pantera, so I'm taking the Taurus this time. Frowner

Ron's story about the patient being admitted into the emergency room had me thinking today, so instead of a joke, I wanted to share something more inspirational.

The first home I purchased as a young man was located in Long Beach Calif. At the time I was working in the port city of Wilmington, at an electric generating station. Daily I drove Pacific Coast Highway in the morning on my way to work, through some tough parts of the city.

On my commute each morning I would pass a man, not much older than myself, who was missing his body below the waist. He was commuting to work like myself, his torso sitting upright upon a piece of plywood with 4 wheels. He had a wooden block in one hand, padded with carpeting, and his lunch pail in his other hand. He would use the lunch pail & the wooden block, rowing with his arms, to push himself along the side of the highway, between traffic & the parked cars. He wasn't feeling sorry for himself, he wasn't sitting in a wheel chair at a traffic stop with a sign asking for donations. He was going to work, just like me. On a piece of plywood, in traffic, on Pacific Coast Highway.

When ever I think I've got it tough, I think of that guy. He'll never know how much he has inspired me, and no doubt many other commuters on Pacific Coast Highway.

Just like that man, I'll never know how many lives my life has "touched". My life long challenge to myself has been to be as equally inspirational, or at least a positive influence, in the lives around me.

George, I hope you get this post before you leave for the beach. Because at the beach, you have to try the pick-up line, at least once, and at the first opportunity. I'll tell you why, and we're talking about the pick up line I told you last week.

At 4:05 I was walking back from the postal drop box in the back. Walking down the sidewalk from 50 yards away, I see her, the best looking lady I've seen all day lng. So, I took the 45 degree angle across the parking lot and met up with her at the crosswalk. "Hello, you're the best looking lady I've seen all day." Pause, wait for the reaction... Smile, a laugh and the usual "Thank you." Some small talk, "I saw you walking this way the other day. My office is right here... you must park down the street or something." She says "Yeah, I park over there. So this is your office?" Some more small talk from me before I ask THE QUESTION, as we're crossing the street and walking down the sidewalk, calculating I have to make this fast.... "Yeah, I've been in this building been here 4 years and was in that building 9 years." Pause. The question: "how does a guy like myself get a date with you?" A little awkward feeling, I decide to polish it up same and delivery the question again, so as to not seem so smoothe about it... "I mean, how can I, me, get a date with you?" She says, after she looks me in the eyes for a while, she had stopped walking... "I have a boyfriend." Hmm,I've heard that before... "So how's it going with him, your boyfriend?" She's looking in my eyes a while again. "OK. Alright. I've known him for a long time..." she said. "Well, it's been nice talking to you, Maybe I'll see you agin, here's my office, what's your name?" So she told me her name and I did the same. Then she put out her hand, and while continuing to stare in my eyes with her green eyes, she offered me her hand and gave me a nice, long, soft handshake.
.......

So, George, I aim to inspire you with a little experience, and encourage you with that story, so try out the pick up line. I've had very good luck with it. There is always a good reaction. Pick out the lady who you think is very beautiful, that way she'll see the sincerelty in your eyes, as you break the ice. The sooner you try it, the sooner you'll see it works and is very easy to do.

Don't be surprised if you hear she has a boyfriend. It happens. Think of what you're going to say when you find out she doesn't have a boyfriend. If you try it 10 times a week, you'll definitely be finding yourself in an interesting situation. I missed an opportunity or two already, in the last week, to deliver the pick-up line, and vow to be ready and just make the approach and delivery more often.

George! You are in the most fortunate of situations, my friend! It's the most successful technique of all to hangout with a platonic lady friend, and assist each other in the delivery of the pick-up line! It creates a 'competition' situation for the beautiful lady, right off the bat, and shows you're a gentleman with the ladies, like their company, etc. Or you can deliver the line for Debby and in return, she can deliver the line for you, or just sit there, looking jealous or disinterested, what ever seems most appropriate. That is, if Debby is the right person to help out in the reciprocal, mutually advantageous, arrangement.

There's actually a service, which for a fee, will set you up with a platonic date and she'll go do the inquiry or inquiries about availability and interest of the lady you have set your eyes on, in a bar, the shopping mall, or where ever you want.

Never tried the service....

Big Grin
