What would be the easiest way to identify what cam I have?
I bought an engine that was built (has roller rockers and a high performace cam) is all I know. The guy I bought the engine from could not provide any info on the build other than to say the engine was built 6 years ago and was never installed in the car. I pulled the valve cover and can see the roller rockers, but that is it. I need to put a distributer in the car but don't know if I should go for a steel or bronze gear.
With out actually having to pull the cam, is there any way to know what gear I will need?
Is there any info stamped on the end of the cam that I can view if I pull the timing cover?
Thanks in advance

Some cams are stamped with numbers on the face of the 1st cam journal while others are stamped between the first one or two loves on the cam shaft itself. To be safe, you should examine BOTH areas. The stampings (if there are any) typically do NOT have brands but from the actual numbers, experts can tell who made it and then the manufacturer can sort it out if yu contact them.

Look at it this way- an operating, lightly modified engine is worth maybe $5000 and a replacement cam- of which you would know its characteristics- is worth maybe $250 or so. If you just cannot tell what you've got now, pull the cam out and replace it. I once went around and around with an owner on this subject- until he found a cam card in the paperwork included with his engine. The cam card numbers showed his cam was only suited for extreme high-rpm drag-racing or superspeedway racing. He was unsuccessfully trying to use it around town....
Steel gear it is!!
Sorry bosswrench, not really wanting to pull the cam if I can avoid it. Looking for the easy way on this one and hoping it does not come back and bite me in the butt.
Captin, we ought to get together one of these days. I have seen you driving your car but have never met you. I do look forward to it. I am in Ft. Myers by College and Winkler. I have 3 panteras here and have 2 friends about 2 - 3 miles from here that have panteras. Be good to all get together.
Larry B. Lamant should do you right! As a fellow pantera owner he knows what motivates these cars. I however have gone a little different direction with my builds. I have used Joe from Joes Performance. He is now at motor plex on old 41 by shell factory. He has built me 2 stroker motors at 500HP that I happily dropped in 2 of my older builds. Joe does nice work but if he says its going to take 8 weeks, plan on 16 weeks. Can honestly say they were faster than my Viper and handled better too.

I spoke to Lamont a couple of weeks ago. He refered me to someone else to do the lifter bore bushings. He estimated that it would cost between $400 - $600 per block. I have 2 complete motors. I might as well do both.

I also Know Ron who owns the Motorplex shop. He has helped me before on my Falcon. I am going to go over and see him to see what he has to say. His shop is a great place to visit. Lots of Hot Rod stuff. Ask to see the Bar he has in the shop. It is truely remarkable. Just like a typical Neighborhood Bar.
