I have a GT5, #09178. As we all know the front tires are nearly impossible to find them and when we do the price is rediculious.
So I am going to spend the money and finally upgrade the wheels and end this problem.

I want to keep the new wheels as close to the original look as possible.

From the experience of those that upgraded, who has the best and correct wheels ?

Also, what is the advantage of going to 17" front and 18" rears ? vs 17" all the way around ?

Thanks Guys !

The difference between 17 or 18 rears is just about nothing, as fare as size is concerned. Or say 5%of both good and bad features. Let the selection of rubber make the decision.

If you don't care about unsprung weight and good to sharp handling, then use the 18" 17" combo. Check under your right front fender and see if there is a box like protrusion up inside next to the dash panel for the windsheild wiper motor. You will possibly need to cut, remanufacture, re close this opening when going to a non stock wheel. I suspect that the GT5 has this protrusion as do the GT5-S cars. If not there, you are a bit luckier as far as wheel fitting is concerned. You will still have to carefully consider wheel offsett issues. However, if you have to do the wiper motor box thing, and consider the down time, handling issues, you might reconsider the original tires as a better buy. YOu can still get them. Best of luck.

Coz,

I highly endorse the forged, fully polished wheels made by Boyd Coddington and sold through Marino at Pantera East. For a view of them on Mike Dailey's car, go to his web site WWW.panteraplace.com If you buy them, save yourself some headaches and use 1" short stubby rubber valve stems, the ones with the chrome metal covers that cover the black rubber stem. Don't ask how I learned this ;-)

Marino's number in Florida is - 727-381-1151

I won't ask. Been there to many times and know what you mean.
Advice well taken.
Thank you Larry.

$3300??

Records are at home, but I paid about $2300 for my set of 16"/17" forged, with centers, lug nuts and shipping. Another $1200 for Michelin Pilot Sports and total was about $3600.

I remember a big price jump if going to 17"/18", but I don't think even four 17" should come up to $3300. Price change?

If they ARE $3300....ouch!!

But I do love the wheels :-)

Actually the PE wheels on my car are the billet wheels that have a more defined center section. They are absolutely the mot beautiful wheels that you have ever seen. The 16 front wheel fits so well with the front fenders and keeps the front-end of the Pantera low like de Tomaso wanted it with 45 profile side walls too!

On top of that Marino is super great to deal with too!

$3300.00 without tires.

PE8860 WHEELS "CAMPI" GT4-GT5-GT5(S) 17" CONVERSION (OURS 17x11 & 17x13 - Compare)

PE8861 WHEELS "CAMPI" GT4-GT5-GT5(S) 17-18" CONVERSION (OURS 17x11 & 18x13 - Compare)

THE PE8860's FEATURE 17x11" FRONT & 17x13" or 18x13" REAR WHEELS. THESE ARE THE ULTIMATE FLARED CAR WHEELS. PANTERA EAST HAS "CORRECTED" THE POOR FACTORY SCRUB-RADIUS ON FRONT WHEELS BY CHANGING THE OFFSET FOR BETTER HANDLING YET STILL "FILLING" THE FENDER WELL (NO PUNY 9" FUNNY CAR LOOK HERE with 4-5" FENDER TO TIRE CLEARANCE). RUN 285/40 FRONT TIRES (req's MINOR SPLACH SHIELD MODS)AND FULL 13" WHEELS ON THE REAR. COMPARE BEFORE YOU BUY (OTHERS USE ONLY 9.5" FRONTS & 11-12" REARS)- YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID. RECOMMEND 275/35x17 FRONT ( NO MODS REQ'D)AND 335/35x17 or 345/35x18") REAR TIRES. SEE FOR YOURSELF. ORDER NOW. (REQUIRES FACTORY SPACERS & LUGS - BOTH SPACERS AND LUGS MAY BE PURCHASED SPEARATELY FOR NON FACTORY FLARED CARS)

The wheels are for a GT-5, hence the spoked Campy variety and the $3300 price. Also, tires are (or will soon be) nonexistant in the 16inch variety for a widebody. So the front should be 17 inches.

This is for a GT5.
I think I am going to look around some more.

Thanks.
Cozman.

If you want the aftermarket route .. recommend you take the car to a reputable tire/wheel place and have them take the measurements. Or if you have your original Campys, you can measure the correct offsets of these wheels.
Thanks Bob.
What is the correct way to measure the current wheels for offset ?

This site is very helpful.

http://www.etddiscounttire.com/wheeloffset.html

Try to figure the offset yourself..then take the wheel to a reputable tire/wheel shop and compare figures. You`ll end up with factory sizes you can employ in your wheel search.

Some folks customize these figures in order to fill the fender or flares a little more. But care must be taken to avoid clearance issues since you`ll be installing much taller tires than you`re running right now (that is, if you`re currently running 345/35 15inch tires in the rear).
Thank you Bob.
Appreciate the help.

I sure as damn would like to know the weight of one of these 17 / 18 inch rims plus tyre.(rear)with the 345 /35 on.
Please someone weigh one.
I will weigh my 15" spun-ally three-piece Split Compomotive rim and 15 x 345/35 P7.
Should be interesting to compare.
Just bought a set of 15's P7's without a problem or delay for reasonable money too.
Come and live here in sunny South Africa . No rust, good weather, nice people, a 10 year old working Democrasy, stable govenment and flourishing ecconomy. Little law enforcement regarding driving 'strange' motor cars. - I drove a GT 40 Replica around all over here daily ( It had a good A/C system )for 8 years, - never got stopped. Every one is car mad. Way cool..... Cheers.
I have been looking at various wheels and i think im going to run compmotives halibrand 3 piece wheel.17 x9.5 front and 17x12 rear.i think the backspacing will be 4 inches both front and rear.275/40/17 front and 335/35/17 rear.comps wheels are fairly light and should not weigh much more than the 15 inch wheels im running now.
