I notice everyone identifies their car by a number. Where is this number located? I seem to have conflicting numbers between the engine compartment, the VIN and the plate that surrounds the VIN. Where is my "number"?

Should be the last four digits of your VIN. Either on the dash corner, door, or on top of the brake booster box stamped into the metal.

Theres a metal plate in my engine compartment bearing a stamped 4-digit number. The plate is riveted immediately adjacent to the "emissions" plate. What number is that?
Engine number .. should also be stamped on the left rear deck of the block ..if its the original motor or never been decked. its not the same as the serial #.

There's a VIN tag on the drivers side of the dash that's visible through the windshield. In the front trunk, on top of the footbox that the master and clutch cyl attach to, the VIN is stamped into the metal. On the drivers door jam is a rivited plastic tag that has the VIN and build date. The VIN starts with THPN.

The last 4 digits of your vin# are also stamped on the inside of each headlight bucket. Yes P car owners commonly refer to their car with those last 4 numbers, such as mine 7260. Hey it's fun. Congrats on your purchase. Chuck

I'm maintaining 7367 manufactured 7/74. Lot of numbers between 7260-7367 for that July.
