should the oil pan be the same color of dark Ford blue?
Yes Sirree Bob!!😉
How was the engine bay in a ´72 car finished? Did it reflect the body color? Mine came with a gooey black bituminous coating. Horrible stuff. Removed it and finished the bay with flat black paint. Drawback is that it easily collects dust. Next time I will go for semi-gloss. Any comments?

Yup! They all came with a heavy coating of petroleum based undercoating applied liberally all over the engine bay. And you're right, it is "horrible stuff." I removed it from mine and sprayed it with truck bed liner to approximate the original appearance (but it's much cleaner looking and has a slight gloss). It's also easier to clean than the original undercoating.
As for the dust, the engine compartment always gets dusty because air flowing over the top of the car and down onto the decklid creates a vacuum at the top of the engine which draws dirt, dust and even gravel up into the engine compartment. It doesn't matter what you coat the engine compartment with, it will all get covered with dust. But paint or bed-liner do rinse clean much easier than the original undercoating.

My car is an original late 74 and has a satin black finish in the engine compartment. Not sure when they stopped with the gooey black stuff.
As Garth says, the truck bed liner stuff is pretty tough, or I would just go with the satin/semi gloss black. Easy to touch up with a rattle can when you scratch it while working on the engine.
