In the U.K. our paint is called 2 pac. It is a thicker more professional paint to use than cellulose pant commonly found in a can. 2 pac paint can be mixed and bought in a can, but, applying through a spray gun using a compressor enables you to obtain a finer application of paint. Same for the clear. However, even a poor application of paint using a can, can be made to look good because it is what you do with the paint after spraying that really counts. By flatening the paint with fine wet and dry paper spraying clear then flatening again, then polish, will give a nice glass finish. Unfortunately, it's all trail and error and will require lots of practice before obtaining the perfect DIY finish.

Jan, I always use 2 componet systems that require an activator or hardner. I have seen but never used products from dupont that have a small can of activator attached to the bottom of the spray can. You twist the bottom and it releases the activator into the pressurized can. They make a door jamb clear, and a 2k primer. I would think that's as good as you will get from a can. Plus they have the fan patteren tips. If it ain't activated, it just won't get hard enough to buff. NAPA has it.

It is pretty comon to have paint stors which can match your color and mix it up in a spray can with hardener. It must be used within a short period of time.

Thanks guys! Looks like I sure won't be using the spray paint shown in the cans. I didn't think of the hardner aspect of it. I may just take it to a paint shop or ask about the hardner mixed with paint in a spray. Any recommended paint shops in Orange County CA?

If it's just black how about a powder coater?

All good advice and I too love having a go and have achieved some very good results. However, doing a good job yourself is very rewardind and satisfying, but, having it done professionally for you is if not more pleasing. Simple spraying is an art-form when done by a competent garage. Somerthing to marvel at. Regardless of the size of the application in the long run , it's best done by a pro.(no one will ever be able to tell who last changed the spark plugs in your car, but will know that a panel was sprayed using a can at home).
