On Fridays I pick up my son from school.
I try to rotate what car I drive, usually it is something out of a friends collection of muscle cars. Today it was this.

Mini-mom's (Mom's in Minivans) are getting used to leaving me a good parking space. Last week it was the Pantera, and a Chinese-accented lady actually knew what it was - what a surprise!
Today nobody guessed exactly right.

Care to add your Kids-in-Kool-Kars photos?

Chuck

Hey Chuck, I've read your articles and appreciate them. Is that a D-type you're in? That's a rather "one off" ride for the carpool line.

My city is fairly small, so anything a little 'odd' stands out.

The car I drive on Fridays (996 twin turbo) though NOT unusual generally gets stares from some of the middle school kids. My 328 was often mistaken for a Corvette (I know, I don't see the resemblance at all, but it happened fairly regularly).

Can't wait to get the Pantera in the pick up line later this spring. I still say you trump most any car I've ever seen there. You win!
I think you guys are missing the point this is not a competition. It is an opportunity to post a photo of you picking up your kid in something unusual. If a Pantera – Great, that naturally qualifies.

It started when I picked up my kid in the Pantera, which happens often now. But I like to add something different
to the parking lot show. At his school parents line up (often 15 minutes or more too early), so it is kind of a quick car
show.

The kids like to see something different than the usual SUV/Minivan.
My kid like it when I drive my old, rusty, loud, 4WD Ford pickup. It’s cool because it’s different.

I’ve motivated a few others, usually dads, to drive something different, a Ferrari, and old willies army jeep, or Grandpa’s
Ford Skyliner.

I’d show up riding a backhoe just to make the kids laugh!

I think a Trident, Messerschmidt or Isetta (sp ?) is cool, even if they seem like a toy (miniature) car.
Know what a Trident is? Here is a Photo:

(BTW: I wish the board would not throw away my text, just because I tried to load a photo that is too big. I hate rewriting.)

Very cool!
My boys are in high school now, but they still think it's cool when I pick them up in one of the sports cars. If I pick them up one at a time - Pantera. If they both need a ride - 1970 Trans Am.
Next year one of them will be 16. He wants an X1/9 to play with during the week & a Model T for weekends.
I guess the apple doesn't fall from the tree after all!
Chuck, you're the only person I know who has driven a legless insect. The tires on that thing are like, what, from a wheelbarrow? Wow.

You've got me to thinking (dangerous) about something. My 14 year old and his friends are all getting more into cars, but it's sporadic or limited to what they see on TV. I may try to assemble the very few car guys around here and have a little 'show and tell' with them and their school age children some Spring Saturday.

Could do it at either at the school or the world's stinkiest storage building (mine, was a dealership downtown here when Dinosaurs roamed the earth). It'd be fun regardless.

I believe your idea is a little entertainment and exposure couldn't hurt. I totally agree. By the way, my wife's family are Meltons. Promise. Could the sick-o car gene have jumped through marriage?

Thanks again for the idea.

I liked the X1/9 so much I have owned two of them; a 1978 and a 1981. I thought of them as "metric Panteras"; 150kph vs 150mph, etc.

My only real knock against them was chassis stiffness. I put stiff swaybars on the '81, and if you parked it on uneven ground the doors noticably jammed. If you took the top off and opened both doors, you could see why; the car is only about a foot thick.

The X1/9 is a fun car to drive, and didn't cost much to run, either. He could definitely do worse.

Hmmm.... I'm on my fifth mid-engine car now, if I count the Lola T340.
I've still got the '74 I bought back in 1981, but it's not roadworthy (yet!). Building a pole barn this spring so I can start my restoration projects & to teach my son how much hard work it takes to keep these cars safe & reliable. He loves to work on things & is a quick study. I've taught him how to read a schematic & he can't wait to start working on "his car"!

You've baited the hook! So what are the other mid-engined cars?

Hint: Clues in original post. Wink

But to enumerate, they are:

1. 1974 Pantera, purchased new from dealer.
2. 1975 Lola T340 Formula Ford, bought used with one season on it.
3. 1978 X1/9, purchased new from dealer.
4. 1981 X1/9, ditto.
5. 1973 Pantera, purchased November 2006.

Those aren't consecutive; there were other vehicles in between and during, such as the F250 I had while racing.
