Thanks Doug. I mounted it as such and it is working well. It seems sturdy enough. This is one of Wilkinson's new aluminum tanks.
As a possible option, a few of the prototype Panteras had one tank on each side of the engine bay, attached differently on the left due to the fuel tank shield. There are no detailed photos from 55 years ago, though. The good part of this is, no one can criticize your doing it your own way. As you can see from the factory production weld quality, some of the car's small detail is pretty crude.
