At some point in my trip to Reno my speedo quit working. I've checked the connection at the guage and it is tight. Pulled the cable off the ZF and spun it with a drill. Nothing. Are there gears inside the speedo guage that can break? If it is inside the guage is it worth repairing or should I just get a set of modern guages and swap them out?
Thanks for the help,

...I would look for a 'Speedometer Shop' in My area. They would have every fitting needed to make up a new(Inside)cable. Be sure to take ALL of Your Broken Cable(if this is Your case)into the Shop, so they can Get the Length correct! You would NOT have to remove the Outside 'Sheath'. But check to make sure there are No sharp bends or kinks in the sheath that caused your problem in the first place! Then just lube it up as you slide it in, Fixed! I use 'Teflon Grease', or a very thin Oil. Good-Luck with it!...
Depends entirely on whether the speedo cable broke or its something else thats gone wrong. If the inner cable did break, it could simply have worn through the polyethylene cable liner, which themcatches the inner cable and snaps it. Adding a new inner cable into a worn outer, greased or not, will very likely break the new inner cable too. When I did this many years ago, the new inner cable did not survive a ride around the block. Complete new speedo cable assemblies are now teflon lined and work much more smoothly, likely also living longer.
